Seun Kuti Set to Release New Album ‘Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head)’ on October 4th
Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti is poised to release his highly anticipated album, Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head), on October 4th through the Milan-based independent label Record Kicks. This new work arrives six years after his Grammy-nominated album, Black Times, marking a significant moment in Kuti’s career as both an artist and activist.
The album is executive produced by renowned musician Lenny Kravitz and features artistic production by Fela Kuti’s original engineer, Sodi Marciszewer. The collaboration promises a groundbreaking fusion of contemporary and traditional afrobeat elements, showcasing Kuti’s evolution while honoring the genre’s roots.
Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head) includes six dynamic tracks that explore themes of resistance, resilience, and revolution. The single “Dey,” featuring reggae legend Damian Marley, advocates for embracing one’s identity, while “Emi Aluta,” with Zambian artist Sampa The Great, pays tribute to revolutionaries. The track “T.O.P.” critiques societal values prioritizing wealth over people, and “Love & Revolution” reflects Kuti’s personal devotion to his wife and his belief in love’s power to inspire change.
In discussing the album, Seun Kuti expressed gratitude for Kravitz’s guidance and support, noting the personal and professional impact of their collaboration. He also praised Sodi Marciszewer for his mentorship and dedication during the recording process.
As a musician and pan-African activist, Kuti continues to champion social change through his music. His recent efforts include involvement in the #EndSARS movement against police brutality in Nigeria and the revival of the Movement of the People (M.O.P.), the political party founded by his father, Fela Kuti.
Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head) will be available on all major streaming platforms, as well as in limited edition vinyl and CD formats. The album promises to not only entertain but also inspire activism and liberation.
Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, has dedicated his career to preserving and extending his father’s musical and political legacy. As the leader of Egypt 80, Kuti has released several albums and collaborated with notable artists including Black Thought, Janelle Monáe, and Talib Kweli. His work continues to resonate with global audiences and contribute to the evolving landscape of afrobeat.
